Washington Monthly College Rankings

Community Service, Research, and Social Mobility

The Washington Monthly issued its second annual rankings last Thursday, and Antioch College ranked 48th out of the 202 liberal arts schools evaluated. The Washington Monthly's measures seek to draw attention to schools with a strong commitment to public service and high academic standards. Their rankings are based on three main categories: Community Service, Research, and Social Mobility.

Components of the Community Service category include the percentage a school's students enrolled in the Army and Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps; the percentage of its alumni who are currently serving in the Peace Corps; and the percentage of its federal work-study grants devoted to community service projects.

For liberal arts colleges, the Research category is based on the percentage of undergraduate alumni who have gone on to receive a PhD, and spending on research.

The third category, Social Mobility, focuses on the percentage of students at an institution who receive Pell Grants with respect to graduation rates. Pell Grant acceptance is used as an indicator of the institution's commitment to low-income students.

More information on the research Methodology is available from the Editors at the Washington Monthly's Website.
