A Guide to Giving - Antioch College
Loren Pope recently stated about Antioch in Colleges That Change Lives: "There is no college or university in the country that makes a more profound difference in a young person's life, or that creates more effective adults."
Antioch's regimen of classes, co-op, and community transforms students by making them responsible for their education; their living arrangements and livelihoods while on co-op; and their community. It also gives them the discipline and the skills to exercise this responsibility effectively.
Antioch ranks high on the John Templeton Foundation's roster of Colleges that Encourage Character Development and on the National Survey of Student Engagement. The qualifications of the students it admits are an important gauge of a school's caliber.
Giving to Antioch: The Importance of Annual Giving
Each year nearly 5,000 alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends show their support of Antioch College with gifts to the Fund for Antioch College. The College counts on the consistent generosity of these individuals to keep the Antioch reputation going strong. Gifts to the Fund for Antioch College contribute nearly 10% of Antioch's annual operating funds (the annual fund year runs from July 1 to June 30), providing critical unrestricted support for everything from faculty salaries, student financial aid, library development, the cost of light bulbs, snow removal and other general operational expenses of the College.
There are many ways of providing support to Antioch and each is important to the continued success of the College.
Gifts by cash and credit cards
Checks are always appreciated. We also accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover. You may send your gift in credit card form through the mail, call the Development Office directly to make a gift, or provide your card information to one of our student callers during Antioch's Phonathon. Giving with credit cards provides instant pledge fulfillment and allows Antioch to put your gift to work immediately.
Electronic Funds Transfer
Many Antiochians have requested the ease and simplicity of electronic funds transfer. You decide the amount of your monthly contribution and send an authorization to Antioch. We, in turn, notify your bank of your permission to withdraw a specified amount from your account every month. Giving on a regular monthly basis without the hassle of writing and mailing one large check can allow increased support of Antioch with little financial discomfort to you. For less than $85 per month, you can become a member of Antioch's Horace Mann Society ($1,000 and above on an annual basis). For just over $40 each month, you can join the College’s newest giving society: The Rebecca Pennell Society ($500-$999 annually).
Pledges
Pledges are customarily made payable over a three-to-five-year period. A pledge form is used to express the chosen payment schedule. A pledge is deductible in the year it is paid.
Matching Gifts
If you work for a company that matches donations, your gift to Antioch can be doubled or tripled. Many subsidiaries of parent companies also are eligible. Retired employees and non-alumni spouses often qualify as well. Simply obtain a matching gift form from your personnel office, follow the instructions for initiating the match and send the completed form with your gift.
How to Invest in the Antioch Legacy
There are a variety of ways to make a charitable gift to Antioch College. While cash gifts are the most popular, there are other creative and exciting strategies available which may not only address your interest in supporting Antioch but also provide you with increased income and tax benefits.
Gifts of Stock
Stock and gifts of securities provide an opportunity to support Antioch while realizing tax savings for you. Gifts of stock allow you to save taxes twice: first, you generally deduct the full current value of the stocks (not just what you originally paid); second, you bypass capital gains taxes. Please contact a member of the Development staff at 1.800.411.6780 or 937.769.1200 for the appropriate information.
Real Estate
Gifts of real estate or a bargain sale transaction may be desirable, subject to review and approval of the Antioch University Board. It is also possible for you to make a gift of your personal residence, farm or vacation home, reserving the right to occupy it for as long as you or your spouse live. If this gift is irrevocable, you qualify for an immediate tax deduction for the present value of the remainder interest in the property.
Gift Annuities
Many Antiochians who wish to make meaningful contributions to the College and provide for the future financial well-being of their heirs or themselves have used the charitable gift annuity. A gift annuity makes it possible to give to Antioch and, in exchange, you and/or someone else you designate will receive a guaranteed income for life. We require a minimum of $25,000. Antioch can arrange for annuity payments to be electronically transferred to your checking or savings account.
Including Antioch in Your Will
Estate gifts are the ultimate expression of commitment and dedication to Antioch. Recent changes in federal accounting standards enable Antioch to list bequests as assets. By notifying the College of your estate plans, you strengthen Antioch's financial position. Donors who provide support for the College in their Will are accorded membership in the Hugh Taylor Birch Heritage Society.
Endowed Scholarship Support
Some Antiochians choose to honor friends, loved ones, or faculty members by establishing an Endowed Scholarship. Investment returns on endowed scholarships are awarded annually in the name of the individual(s) honored. In order to maintain sufficient scholarship levels, a minimum of $50,000 is required to establish an Endowed Scholarship fund at Antioch College and a minimum of $1,500,000 is required to establish an Endowed Chair.
Life Insurance
If you own a life insurance policy which you no longer need, you might consider making Antioch the sole owner and beneficiary of the policy. You would receive an income tax deduction for roughly the cash surrender value of the policy. If you give Antioch a policy that is not fully paid, you may consider continuing to pay the premiums. You will receive a tax deduction for the annual premium amount.
One More Way You Can Help
The role of alumni as ambassadors is extraordinarily important. By referring a student to Antioch, you can make a significant difference.
