Documentary Filmmakers on Campus
Matt Dresdner ’89 was accompanied by documentary filmmakers in June to film exterior shots of campus for their film project The Gits. The film will explore the self-titled Seattle band’s journey from its inception at Ohio’s Antioch College in 1986 to the tragedy that cut its promise short, the murder of Mia Zapata ’88 in 1993. The film will contextualize The Gits as part of a loyal and creative artistic community, and will examine the band’s lives and music from the perspectives of fans, friends, peers and the former band members themselves. It will also focus on their extraordinary and dynamic vocalist, Mia Zapata, and how fans, as well as those close to her, were irrevocably altered by her exuberant life and senseless murder on July 7, 1993, just as the band was poised to explode onto the national underground music scene. Efforts made by the Seattle music community in search of Mia’s killer and the community’s response to the recent arrest of her suspected killer will be detailed respectfully as a part of the whole of the band’s story.
