Antioch College and Yellow Springs
150 Years of Creating Community
By Lauren Heaton

A view of Xenia Avenue in the early days. Notice the original location of the Miami Deposit Bank in the left corner.

At the mention of Yellow Springs, people aren’t likely to conjure up a progressive college town in southwest Ohio. Say “Antioch”, however, and their minds alight, associating historic ideas and events with the household name.

This summer the Village celebrates its bicentennial – 200 years since settling near the iron rich spring – and the College celebrates its sesquicentennial – 150 years of winning victories for humanity. Where would the College be without the Village? Yellow Springs would hardly be the same without a century and a half of Antioch’s liberalizing influence. The College brought ideas such as racial and sexual equality to the Village. The Village supplied facilities and personnel to support the innovative entrepreneurs that came out of the College. The College supplied faculty and staff for leadership positions in community government and local organizations in the Village. The layers grew and grew until the reciprocation permeated so many aspects of life in Yellow Springs that, in some instances, it became difficult to distinguish the College from the Village, creating a unique and lasting community that continues to attract people from across the country.
