Antioch Welcomes New Trustees

Five new trustees – Frances Bond, David Crippens ’64, Reuben Harris ’69, Harold Joseph ’54, and Jordan Tamagni ’84 – were recently elected to the Board of Trustees, as well as John Feinberg ’70, who was elected as an ex-officio member. They will each serve a three-year term, and joined the Board in July 2003.

Frances Bond of Baltimore, MD, received her BA and MEd from Towson State College in Maryland. She went on to earn a PhD in Human Development, Guidance and Counseling, and Research Methodology at the University of Maryland. Bond began her career at Towson University teaching graduate and undergraduate courses. During her tenure at Towson, she served as Chairperson of the Early Childhood Department, Associate Director of the Center for Applied Skills in Education, and Associate Dean of the College of Education.

In 1994, Bond left Towson to work with the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C., where she assumed the role of Associate Director of the Peace Corps Fellows Program. In 1999, she moved into the position of Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Education, a position she held until 2001. Bond is presently Director of Professional Development for PBS Ready To Learn. Bond has served on numerous regional and national boards and councils including the National Association for Teacher Education, the Education of Young Children Review Board, the Governor’s Council on Children and Youth in Maryland, and the Teacher Education Advisory Board at Dundalk and Essex Community Colleges.

Bond has received many grants and awards including the Frances T. Bond Distinguished Service Award. An award established in Bond’s honor, that recognizes the outstanding service of an undergraduate and graduate student in education. Bond also received the Presidential Award from Towson University, and in 2000 she was honored by the University’s Graduate School and the Center for Research, and the Greater Towson Partnership Committee with the Distinguished Lecture Series Award. This award is presented for, “Distinguished Achievement to Someone Who Has Shaped Our Lives.”

David L. Crippens ’64 of Inglewood, CA, received his BA in Political Science at Antioch College and his MA in Social Work at San Diego State University in 1968.

Crippens is a former Antioch Trustee who served on the Board from 1987 until 1996. He will be rejoining the board after a six-year hiatus. During his time on the Board, he served on the Development, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs Committees, and gave the commencement address to the class of 1991 at Antioch University, Southern California.

After graduating from Antioch College in 1964, Crippens spent two years in Nigeria as a volunteer for the Peace Corps. In 1969 he became the Director of San Diego State’s Educational Opportunity Program, and from the early 70s on he worked in various capacities with KCET, the public television station of Los Angeles. He left KCET in 2001 as Senior Vice President for education and foundations. He is presently President and CEO of DLC & Associates, a consulting company directed toward non-profit management, fundraising and transitional leadership. He recently completed service as Acting Executive Director for the California African American Museum in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, CA. Crippens has been involved with many organizations including the Achievement Council and Editorial Projects in Education, and the Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board’s Youth Council. Crippens has received numerous awards for his work with education, media and non-profits.

He has remained deeply involved with Antioch through the College and the University over the years, serving most recently on the Antioch University Southern California Board of Visitors and the Antioch University Southern California Horace Mann Society.

Crippens is pleased to rejoin Antioch’s board of Trustees: “Antioch values provided a strong foundation for my life’s journey.”

John Feinburg ’70 of Boulder, CO, President of the Alumni Association (since 2003), is an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees. Feinberg’s BA is in Environmental Design; he holds an MA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts (1973). Feinburg is the founder and a partner in The Collaborative, Inc. (since 1974), where he is a landscape architect and planner. He is a historic preservation specialist.

Feinberg is a former professor in the Colorado University-Boulder School of Environmental Design and has been Executive Director for the Association of Historic Hotels. He is the author of three books and is a painter and sculptor. He has been the host of several alumni events and has a long continuing relationship with Antioch.

Reuben T. Harris ’69, of Keene, NH, earned his BS in Engineering at Antioch College, his MBA from the University of Rochester, and his PhD in Business (Organizational Behavior) from Stanford University.

Harris has spent most of his career in academia studying, writing, and teaching about the dynamics of organizations undergoing change and about the factors which contribute to successful change strategies. He has served on the faculties of the University of California (Berkeley), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Naval Postgraduate School (Monterey, CA). Harris was also an International Senior Lecturer at the Irish Management Institute in Dublin, Ireland from 1980 to 1991. He co-authored the book Organizational Transitions: Managing Complex Change, and has authored numerous articles for academic and professional journals. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science and the Academy of Management Review.

In 2001, Harris left his position as Dean of the Graduate School of Management and Public Policy at the Naval Postgraduate School to become Vice Chairman of C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc., one of the largest grocery wholesalers in the U.S. His other experiences outside academia include a six-year stint as Vice President of Research and Development with The Tom Peters Group in Palo Alto, CA, from 1985- 1991. Additionally, since 1971 he has also been an organization and management consultant to numerous organizations in industry, health care, and education. Some of his clients have included: AT&T, Apple Computer, the California Department of Justice, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, Procter and Gamble, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Postal Service.

Harris was elected to the Antioch College Alumni Association Board of Directors in 1995 and served as the Association’s Vice President (1999-2001) and President (2001-2003). He has been serving as an Ex-officio member of the Antioch University Board of Trustees since 2001.

Harold “Hal” Joseph ’54 of Indian Wells, California, received his BA in Social Science from Antioch College before going on to study law at the University of Chicago; he earned an MCRP in 1965 in City and Regional Planning from the University of Southern California. An urban planner, Joseph is currently Executive Director, of the Coachella Valley Enterprise Zone. The Coachella Valley Enterprise Zone offers businesses within its boundaries special state income tax incentives in order to assist an economically challenged region. Previous to this current position, he was Principal of the Joseph Co., a planning and commercial real estate organization. From 1966 to 1982 Joseph was Director of Planning and Director of Marketing for George S. Nolte and Associates, Consulting Engineers, a consulting firm in San Jose, CA. From 1959 to 1966 he served as Planning Director for the City of West Covina, CA, and from 1956 to 1959 he served various roles beginning with a job working for the City Planning Department of Palm Springs, CA. He quickly became Senior Planner for the City Planning Department in Riverside, CA. Joseph has extensive experience in the fields of urban planning, corporate marketing and commercial real estate.

Jordan Tamagni ’84 of New York, NY, received her BA in Liberal Arts at Antioch College and her JD from Brooklyn Law School, where she was an Edward V. Sparer Public Interest Fellow. Tamagni was a political appointee in both the first and second terms of the Clinton Administration, in which she served as Presidential Speechwriter and Special Assistant to President William J. Clinton. In late 1999, she became Senior Director for Corporate Communications at America Online and, following the merger with Time Warner, at AOL Time Warner.

Most recently, Tamagni was appointed to serve as Caroline Kennedy’s Chief of Staff at the New York City Department of Education’s newly created Office of Strategic Partnerships, which works with corporations, foundations, non-profit partners and individuals to raise funds for system-wide reform initiatives, to expand corporate partnerships with individual schools and the broader school system, and to create new opportunities for public participation in improving New York City’s public schools.

Tamagni has extensive experience in the fields of communications and public affairs, and a long-standing commitment to the public interest.
