New Alumni Board Members

By Fred Kraus

Four incumbents and five new members of the Antioch College Alumni Association have been elected to serve three-year terms during the Association’s 2003 election. In addition, four alumni were appointed to three-year terms.

The five new elected members are John Dawson ’58, Gordon Evans ’55, Athena Turner Frederick ’82, Robert Gates ’78 and Steve Schwerner ’60. The four incumbents elected to serve a second term are Reynold Bean ’58, Nancy Crow ’70, Anita Hoffman Ehrenfried ’71 and Penny Storm ’65.

The four alumni appointed to three-year terms to the Board on June 27, 2003, during the Board’s Reunion meeting. These new appointees are E. Ann Baldwin ’80, Laura Fathauer ’95, Douglass Fischer ’92 and Patrick Masterson ’99.

Hal Joseph ’54, who was included on the ballot as an incumbent, recently accepted an appointment to the University Board of Trustees and therefore will be unable to serve on the Alumni Association. His resignation from the Board left a vacancy which was filled by one of the appointments cited above.

About 12,000 ballots were mailed out, and nearly 1,200 ballots were returned by the deadline of June 5, 2003. The decade of the 1950s led the way with the most ballots returned. That decade was followed, in turn, by the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1940s, the 1990s, the 1980s, the 1930s and the 2000s.

In other board action, John Feinberg ’70 was elected as President of the Antioch College Alumni Association by Association members to a two-year term, replacing Reuben Harris ’69, who just completed a two-year term as President of the Association. Harris will continue to serve the Board of Trustees, where he previously served as an ex-officio member. Feinberg had just completed a two-year term as Vice President of the Association.

Nancy Crow ’70 was elected by Association members as Vice President. She will succeed John Feinberg.

Candidates for the Alumni Association are selected by the Nominating Committee of the Association. Committee members select candidates from a pool of nominees that are gathered through various sources, including ballot write-in, peer nominations and self-nominations. The pool of candidates is typically reviewed by the Committee during its fall meeting and then contacted following that meeting. The slate is assembled and mailed out following the spring meeting.

Board membership is completely voluntary. No stipends or other financial enhancements are offered other than limited travel expenses for persons in need.
