Renowned Writer Visits Campus
By Campbell Meeks ’04
Natalie Goldberg, author of Writing Down the
Bones, Banana Rose, Long Quiet Highway, and numerous
other books of creative nonfiction, poetry
and fiction held an all-day writing seminar in conjunction
with an Antioch class and read from her
work in Antioch’s Herndon Gallery in June.
Goldberg’s Writing Down The Bones: Freeing
The Writer Within broke open the world of creativity
and started a revolution in the way we practice writing
in this country. The book has sold over one million
copies and been translated into nine languages.
Since then she has written seven other books, including
the novel Banana Rose.
Living Color: A Writer Paints Her World, is
about painting as a second art form. Her lively watercolors
are exhibited at a gallery in Taos, New
Mexico. Her latest book is Top of My Lungs (Overlook
Press). It contains 40 poems, 20 of her paintings
in color and an essay, “How Poetry Saved My Life.”
Natalie has been practicing Zen meditation and
teaching seminars in writing as a practice for the last
25 years. People from around the world attend her
life-changing workshops and she has a reputation as
a great teacher. The Oprah Winfrey Show sent a film
crew to spend the day with Natalie for a segment on
spirituality that covered her writing, teaching, painting,
and walking meditation.

gift to the College
Natalie has been a visiting artist at Antioch on several
occasions, always engaging the community and
encouraging them to write. Her commitment to the
Antioch community is generous and clear. This visit
she gave Antioch College one of her paintings—City
Corner,New York City 2002—which now hangs in the
President’s Office.
