Antioch Theater

A Streetcar Named Desire

November 7, 8, 9 and  10, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. on the Main Stage Theater of the Antioch Area Theater, 920 Corry Street in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire premiered in 1947. It was both a critical and box office success at the time and Tennessee Williams was ultimately awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1951 a film of the play, directed by Elia Kazan, won several awards, including an Academy Award for Vivian Leigh as Best Actress in the role of Blanche.

The play presents Blanche Dubois, a fading but still-attractive Southern belle whose pretensions to virtue and culture only thinly mask delusions of grandeur and alcoholism arriving to her sister Stella’s home in the French Quarter of New Orleans. There is an immediate clash between the refined Blanche and the brutal and earthy husband of Stella – Stanley Kowalski. Stanley's friend and Blanche's would-be suitor, Mitch, is trampled along with Blanche and Stanley's collision course. Conflicts between reality and fantasy, the abandonment of chivalric codes, and the tragedy of illicit love are some of the themes and motifs of what is considered both Williams' best work and a classic of American tragedy.

The upcoming performance, directed by John Fleming, is a production of the Antioch College Theater Department and is created with a student cast and design crew. The participants include Megg Fleck, Production Designer; Shea Witzberger, Costume Designer; Laura Gonzales, Stage Manager; and features Zoe Julich, Josh Hershfield, Alexandra Kesman, Joseph Inch, Eva Niezgoda, Angela Martinez-Garner, Ben Horlacher, and Alexander Borowicz.

A Streetcar Named Desire will run for four performances only. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Antioch CG members are admitted free. For further information and to make reservations call 769-1030.

Throughout the year the Antioch Theater hosts a variety of student projects, visiting artists and performance events. For news of upcoming events, please call the Antioch Area Theater: 769-1030.
