Safety Information for Parents
Important Medical Information for Students and Parents
Study abroad is a once in a lifetime experience. Studying, traveling, and living in a new culture bring exciting new perspectives and possibilities; however, a new environment can exacerbate existing physical, psychological, learning, and cognitive conditions. We do not have access to students’ medical histories, and we depend on self-disclosure of all conditions that program staff should be aware of prior to departure. Once accepted, students will receive an Antioch Education Abroad Health Information Form. We also strongly recommend that all participants receive a comprehensive physical and dental exam before departure.
Self-disclosure is extremely important to our ability to prepare for students’ successful participation in Antioch Education Abroad educational, study abroad opportunities. Conditions that program staff must be aware of should be reported prior to departure, giving AEA the tools we need to be prepared to accommodate each student's unique needs. The reason we collect this information after students’ acceptance into the program is because our goal is to facilitate safe participation - not to exclude potential participants.
If participants are taking any medications, they should bring a sufficient amount for the entire program, and, if anticipated, for post-program travel. If students are taking medication for depression or other diagnosed psychological disorders, this is not an appropriate time to change dosages or to discontinue taking medications altogether. Doing so could potentially result in early dismissal from the program and/or compromise the student’s safety.
Antioch Education Abroad strongly encourages students to be their own primary health advocates and to communicate with program staff about their health needs whenever appropriate. Student-staff communication is the best guarantee that we can provide appropriate and timely medical attention whenever necessary. Also, please read the Safety Information for Parents page to read more about our safety procedures, including our Phone Protocol.
