OE 580/380 Outdoor Education Methods

I. Introduction: OE 580/380 is a 5-credit course (5 credits for 580 and 5 credits for 380) offered in conjunction with internships at Glen Helen Ecology Institute - Antioch College. OE 580 and 584 are taken concurrently. Receiving any credit is predicated on being on the trails with students for the entire term.

II. Course Objectives:

bullet Plan and lead field trips to the biotic communities of Glen Helen, including the meadow, thicket, deciduous forest, coniferous forest, pond, and stream
bullet Prepare and implement lessons based on OEC curriculum
bullet Skillfully apply outdoor education methods for elementary and middle school students
bullet Design creative environmental education curricula
bullet Develop, organize, and effectively lead large group activities
bullet Model a positive attitude as a team player
bullet Apply teaching strategies based on inquiry and hands-on learning methods
bullet Teach with understanding Ohio pioneer skills and Native American life

III. Course Requirements:

bullet Participate in the initial 2 1/2 week training
bullet Actively participate in all of the Monday class sessions
bullet Lead a minimum of 14 weeks of student groups
bullet Observe peers at least three times during kitchen duty
bullet Attend each Friday meeting to evaluate the week and reflect on areas of needed growth
bullet Participate in all Tuesday morning organizational meetings
bullet Read one book from the Outdoor Education Methods list and one book from the Cultural History list
bullet Keep a daily journal discussing and documenting personal growth
bullet Prepare one written lesson plan using the Glen Helen format

IV. Evaluation:

bullet Administrative staff will accompany each intern on a hike at least twice, offering verbal and written feedback
bullet Each intern will receive written comments on their growth in the journal
bullet Each intern will complete a midterm and final evaluation of their experiences
bullet Each intern will write a self-evaluation and receive a written evaluation by the Director/Assistant Director

The grade for the course is credit / no credit
