Human Rights Painting Project Exhibit Opens at Antioch College’s Herndon Galleryaspen groves patty hawkins

The Herndon Gallery’s upcoming exhibit, the Human Rights Painting Project features work by artist Tom Block, in conjunction with Amnesty International. This beautiful and colorful show depicts the struggle for human rights the world over – and the important work that Amnesty International does in working towards achieving this goal.  Using a contemporary artistic voice, Tom Block interprets different aspects of the fight for human rights, emphasizing the personal stories that bring the struggle to life.  Biographies accompany each portrait. An evening wine reception will be held on Friday, February 23 at 7pm; we do hope you’ll join us for this poignant exhibit.

Mr. Block will also be giving an artist’s lecture and slide presentation on Thursday evening, February 22, at 7pm in the Herndon Gallery.

Tom Block’s paintings are powerful, expressionistic works reminiscent of Oscar Kokoschka’s oeuvre. The work captures the range of emotions exhibited in the battle for human freedom; fear, destitution, pain, hope, joy and even sanguinity form themselves in these faces.  Ultimately, the paintings bring together the best and worst impulses of humankind– the heroes of the images are a counterpoint to the authorities and circumstances that forced them into that role.  As viewers we are challenged to ask difficult questions, both personal and political, that elude simplistic answers.

The exhibit opens on February 20 and runs through April 6, 2007.

The Herndon Gallery is sponsoring a catered opening reception on Friday, February 23 from 7 until 9 pm.  The artist will be present to engage in informal conversation about his works.  We sincerely hope that you will join us—and that you’ll spread the word about this passionate and moving exhibit.

The opening, the artist's talk, and the exhibit are free and open to the public.human rights heretics fork
