Last Thursday, while most of us made the commute to work, Kyle Bennett sat inside a 5 foot 8 inch titanium sphere and traveled two miles deep to the ocean floor…

Kyle Bennett’95, accompanied Dr. Lutz aboard the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution R/V Atlantis for a month-long cruise to the hydrothermal vents on the East Pacific Rise. Kyle had the pleasure to take a dive in the deep-sea submersible Alvin to 2500 meters below the ocean’s surface as part of ongoing collaborative research between scientists at Woods Hole, Rutgers University, and the University of Delaware.
Kyle said he felt calm and peaceful at the bottom of the ocean among the worms and mussels, even though there were nearly two miles of ocean water between this strange world and the world in which he lives.
Without his Antioch education, Kyle may have never made it to the ocean floor. He said, “Jill Yager was my mentor while at Antioch and she was not just tolerant of my peculiar obsession with mollusks, but was encouraging and even egged me on. Now I’m getting to do research on some of the strangest and most fascinating mollusks of all, from the hydrothermal vent ecosystems.”
For more on this fascinating adventure, please read Kyle’s story in the upcoming edition of the Antiochian.

On March 27, Antioch will host a dynamic opening celebration for the Center. This innovative event will include an open house beginning at 9:30 a.m., a community engagement workshop in the morning, and a noon luncheon with speakers, including President Steven Lawry and nationally acclaimed cellist Karen Patterson.
In the evening, these events will culminate in a multi-faceted program dedicated to the life and legacy of Coretta Scott King. The keynote speaker is historian Dr. Vicki Crawford, whose edited book on women in the civil rights movement is one of the most influential early works on the topic and she spoke on NPR about the passing of Coretta Scott King.
Following Dr. Crawford, Antioch students, staff, faculty, and Yellow Springs residents will present dance, orchestral and choral pieces.
Throughout the week, there will be an art show featuring work from Yellow Springs students K-5, themed ‘What does freedom look like’ in the first and second floor lobbies of Kelly Hall.
The celebration is open to the public.
