To commemorate the life of distinguished emeritus professor of literature Nolan Miller, a memorial service will be held on his 100th birthday, Saturday, May 5, 2007. Hosted by Antioch College, the service will be held at Antioch College's Glen Helen Building.
Nolan Miller died at the age of 99, after 54 years of teaching, writing and editing. He accepted a faculty appointment at Antioch in the English and Literature Department as Writer in Residence in 1946. Staying past his original one-year agreement, Miller taught many students including Rod Serling, Richard Kaplan, and former Poet Laureate, Mark Strand. He worked extensively with The Antioch Review, and became its first fiction editor in 1965.
Miller’s short stories were featured in Atlantic Monthly, McCall’s, and The Saturday Evening Post. He authored four novels; the second of which, Why Am I So Beat, was inspired by and dedicated to the students he had advised at Antioch. On July 28, 2000, the Antioch College Alumni Association presented Miller with the J.D. Dawson Award in recognition of his years of loyal service to furthering the mission of Antioch College. This spring, Antioch University McGregor faculty Dr. Jerry Holt will come across the street to Antioch College's campus to offer an inter-generational history class on the sixties. Undergraduate college students and adults from McGregor will participate in a unique classroom setting for a discussion course on the sixties. This is the first time that the two campuses have combined to offer a course. Both graduate and undergraduate students will benefit from each other's perspectives.
Now more than ever, Antioch prepares students for life beyond their baccalaureate.
In the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED), Antioch was ranked in the top twenty percent of U.S. institutions whose students go on to earn a research doctorate. Antioch has risen nearly ten places since last year in the SED ranking. Rank is based on the total number of doctorate recipients from each baccalaureate-origin institution. The fact that Antioch has risen in rank means not only does the college prepare students for graduate school, but has become more adept at doing so.

This is just one example of how Antioch students are able to propel their education into meaningful post-graduate experiences. Antioch’s alumni have the ability to successfully complete graduate programs, begin careers, and become active citizens of the world.
Only recipients of research doctorates are included in the survey. The SED has been in continuous operation since 1958, and is conducted by the National Opinion Research Center under the sponsorship of the following agencies: the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
