Antioch Hosts Delegation of International EducationUSA Advisors

On Tuesday, November 14, Antioch College hosted a group of seven EducationUSA advisors, from China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and Tunisia. The advisors came to Antioch to learn about experiential and interdisciplinary learning in U.S. higher education and to experience Antioch’s unique Core Program learning communities.

Tom Haugsby, Eric Miller, Professors of Cooperative Education, and Dr. Janice Kinghorn, Professor of Economics and Associate Dean of Faculty for the Core Program, introduced the advisors to integrative and experiential learning. The advisors then split into two groups to attend the “American Identities” and “Citizenship” Core Program learning communities.

Many of the visitors remarked that their classroom experience at Antioch was one of the highlights of their trip. Bram Caplan, the Regional Education Advising Coordinator (REAC) for Eurasia, based in Moscow, Russia, wrote

“I wish we had had more time to spend there [at Antioch]!!! When we were back in DC, we had to make presentations on all of the places we visited, and many advisors were very interested to hear about such a unique college. I hope this translates into more international applicants for you.”

The international delegation came to the Miami Valley for a week-long training series organized by the University of Dayton, Miami University, Wright State University, Antioch College, and Sinclair Community College. The colleges and universities involved won a U.S. Based Training Program (USBT) grant from the U.S. Department of State (administered by the College Board) to conduct the training, which included sessions on undergraduate and graduate admissions, academic misconduct, regional accreditation, website design, distance learning, and the topics highlighted at Antioch. The University of Dayton spearheaded the project, which began in March of 2006. The University of Massachusetts, Washington State University, and the University of Memphis were other USBT sites for 2006.

The advisors work for EducationUSA advising centers in their countries. These centers are in part funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs and they actively promote study in the United States to over 25 million prospective students each year. There are over 450 EducationUSA centers located in 170 countries. For more information about Education USA, visit http://educationusa.state.gov/.
